Chain link fences and dog runs
Chain link isn't fancy, but it's durable, quick to install and lets wind and snow pass right through it.
Chain link earns its place in a windy, snowy valley. Because the mesh is open, wind doesn't push on it the way it does on a solid privacy fence, and snow doesn't pile up against it as heavily. It's a common choice for back property lines, side yards, dog runs, vegetable gardens and the fence around a shop or storage area.
What are the options?
- Galvanized. The standard silver finish. Inexpensive and long lasting.
- Black or green vinyl-coated. Blends into landscaping and looks less industrial.
- Heavier gauge mesh. Stiffer and harder for big dogs to push or climb.
- Privacy slats. Inserts that add screening; they also add wind load.
Building a dog run that works
- Height. Match it to the dog. Jumpers and climbers need a taller fence or a top.
- Bottom edge. A tension wire or bottom rail keeps the mesh from being pushed out. For diggers, buried wire or a concrete curb helps.
- Shade and footing. Summer afternoons can be hot and winters cold. Plan for shade and a surface that drains.
- A latch dogs can't work. Self-closing gates help when kids are in and out.
Chain link in the front yard
Cedar City's zoning code treats chain link as a non-obstructing fence. In street-facing setbacks it's generally limited to 30 inches, and it can't be closed off with slats, plants or other materials. Taller chain link belongs along side and rear lines, where the 6-foot limit applies.
Fixing old chain link
A lot of older yards in town have chain link that still has good mesh but bent top rails, loose ties or leaning posts. Replacing the damaged parts and re-stretching the mesh is often all it takes. See fence repair.
Pricing comes from the contractor after they've walked the line, checked the ground and the grade, counted gates and corners, and talked through materials. We don't quote prices, and a number given over the phone before anyone has seen the yard is only a rough starting point.

Common questions
Can I add privacy slats to chain link in Cedar City?
In back and side yards, usually. In street-facing setbacks the city's code generally doesn't allow chain link to be closed off. Slats also add wind load, so posts need to be solid.
Is coated chain link worth it?
It's mostly about looks. Black or green coating blends into a yard better than plain galvanized, and the coating adds a layer of protection.
