Ranch rail and farm fencing
Iron County still has plenty of room: horse lots, big gardens, pasture and acreage on the valley floor. Long runs of open fence need a different approach than a backyard.
Drive the edges of Cedar City, Enoch or Parowan and you'll see a mix of old wire fence, wood and vinyl rail, and welded pipe. Owners call for help when they're fencing a new parcel, keeping horses or other animals in, protecting a garden, or replacing a run of sagging wire that's been patched for years.
What are the common choices?
| Fence | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Wood or vinyl rail (2 to 4 rail) | Defining a lot, horses, curb appeal | Add mesh to keep dogs or small animals in |
| Woven wire / no-climb mesh | Horses, goats, dogs on acreage | Needs well-braced corners to stay tight |
| Welded pipe | Corrals, arenas, heavy use | Strong and long lasting; needs painting |
| Barbed or smooth wire | Cattle and pasture boundaries | Not a good choice for horses; check zoning first |
Why corners and braces matter
A long wire or mesh fence is only as tight as its corners. Each end, corner and gate needs a braced assembly, such as an H-brace, that resists the pull of the stretched wire. When a farm fence goes slack, the cause is almost always a corner that moved, often because frost or wet ground let a post shift.
Gates for equipment and trailers
Plan gate openings around the widest thing you'll pull through, whether that's a horse trailer, a camper or a tractor, plus room to make the turn. Wide gates need heavy hinge posts set deep, and a latch that animals can't nudge open.
Before you fence acreage
- Confirm the property line. On older rural parcels, the existing fence isn't always on the line.
- Check whether your zone allows the fence type and whether animals are permitted on your lot.
- Look for irrigation ditches, canals or easements the fence has to cross or avoid.
- Request Blue Stakes markings, and ask about private water and power lines to outbuildings.
Pricing comes from the contractor after they've walked the line, checked the ground and the grade, counted gates and corners, and talked through materials. We don't quote prices, and a number given over the phone before anyone has seen the yard is only a rough starting point.

Common questions
What fence is safest for horses?
Many owners use rail fence, no-climb mesh or pipe fencing. Barbed wire is generally not recommended for horses. Talk through your animals and lot with the contractor.
Can a contractor fix a sagging wire fence without replacing it?
Often. Rebuilding braced corners and re-stretching the wire can bring an old fence back, as long as the line posts and wire are still sound.
